In August 1988 a building located at 1910 Douglas Ave., Clearwater Florida was purchased and converted into an Orthodox church dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (Κοίμησις τῆς Θεοτόκου). Half of the downpayment was supplied by the Metropolis of Astoria and half by Fr. Koumianos Hatzileris who served as its first priest. Fr. Koumianos had until then been the priest of the church of the Holy Unmercenaries in Alsip, Illinois. Some of the parish\'s first parishoners were originally from Illinois and accompanied Fr. Koumianos to Florida in order to start the parish.

In 1999 the church was renovated to conform with the traditions of the Orthodox Christian faith, including a naturally lit dome and an altar that faces east.
